Opposite the “Port à fumier”, the visual artist Cécile Meynier has constructed a totem like structure which is a sculptural metaphor of the “Hortillonnages” market garden and its patchwork of fields and waterways. With its W-shaped silhouette and pink wedges, the lettuce totem is characterised by an assembly of symbolic elements that are inspired by the coexistence of man and nature in the market gardens of Amiens. These different forms refer to the surrounding cultures and constructions, and their relationships give rise to something new that can be interpreted in different ways. Thus, the wooden frame of the exhibition features the lettuce which is the flagship vegetable of the “Hortillonnages”. Under the structure, the pink wedges serve as reminders of the hunters’ huts and the elegant cabins of the market gardeners. With its lanky and surprising character, the exhibit participates in the scenic panorama and at the same time suggests the presence of an imaginary animal almost like a Picard Loch Ness monster meandering in the bed of a stream, waiting for the unsuspecting walker to turn his back …

The artist

Cécile Meynier

Born in 1978, the visual artist Cécile Meynier has a taste for raw and geometric forms. Her recent practice disrupts this radical aesthetic and moves towards Baroque and minimalism. With collage and associations, her work generates forms without departing from a certain functionalism where the constraint determines the finality of the object.
