An artistic & landscaped trip in the heart of The Hortillonnages of Amiens > a beautiful aesthetic and poetic escape

Dear audience, dear visitors,

The International Garden Festival | Hortillonnages Amiens welcomes you from May 27th to October 15th, 2023. As an annual event not to be missed, it celebrates its 14th edition with 14 new creations, including 5 gardens, 6 artistic installations, and 3 projects by students from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Picardy Jules Verne.

The Festival is dedicated to supporting and promoting young landscape, architectural, and artistic creation in the Hortillonnages, a natural site spanning over 300 hectares between land and water in the heart of the city of Amiens.

Arranged on islands, the gardens and plastic installations of the International Garden Festival | Hortillonnages Amiens form a poetic journey that invites you to take a fresh, curious, or amused look at this unique environment, its history, and its future. It is also a gentle exploration, on foot or by boat, that allows for questioning the connections between nature, culture, agriculture, and heritage in light of the numerous impacts caused by climate change.

Spread across different plots located on the Clermont pond in Camon and Rivery, as well as on the Île aux Fagots in Amiens, the forty-six productions fully integrate contemporary issues of sustainable development and environmental challenges into their reflection and design: the preservation of the ecosystem, the vulnerability of riverbanks, water resources, food production, and the quality of nutrition.

The Festival aims to promote, perpetuate, and reveal this green heritage by offering encounters and workshops suitable for all audiences. It also includes a desire to contribute to the solidarity economy through the distribution of food produced, as well as a social integration approach involving workers from integration projects for garden maintenance and volunteers in civic service for reception.

Over the course of the previous 13 editions, nearly 194 gardens and installations have been created by 296 landscapers, visual artists, and architects; they have been enjoyed by over 520,000 visitors.

An aesthetic and poetic escapade, an artistic stroll that extends beyond Amiens to the banks of the river in Lamotte-Brebière, Corbie, Pont-Rémy, Eclusier-Vaux, Long, Abbeville, and also integrates into the urban landscape of Saint-Quentin: these landscape creations can be discovered in all seasons in the Somme Valley.

This project has been co-funded by the European Social Fund as part of the National Operational Program “Employment and Inclusion” 2014-2020.

The fourth edition of artistic and landscape creations from the International Garden Festival | Hortillonnages Amiens, dedicated to the productions of the years 2018-2019-2020, is available for purchase. You can download the order form here and discover some pages of this new publication.
