From spring to autumn, a canopy reflects the transformations of a modest and useful edible landscape. The structure invites wandering and contemplation. A few hidden benches offer the visitor a moment of rest. Mirrored undersides reflect movement, strengthening the connection between earth and sky. The structure seems to float above the plants. A gutter collects the rainwater to store in a container. Designed and built from reclaimed materials, La Loge des Vagabondes rises within the landscape, cultivating contrasts and movement.

The planting of the island represents an interpretation of the three forms of nature, reflecting both the natural and cultural landscape. Wilderness (first nature) is visible in the untouched edge of the island with its native flora, where visitors disembark their boat. The cultural landscape (second nature) takes the form of a wildflower meadow, through which visitors must pass to reach the garden (third nature). The garden that surrounds the pavilion is a relic of a potager, where order has all but disappeared. Vegetables and herbs now weave freely amongst themselves in a naturalistic composition of edible species, forming an “edible mess”.

In the garden of 65m2 one can find 25 types of vegetables and herbs, 20 types of annuals, and 40 types of perennials, which together form a rich and varied palette. The 235m2 flower meadow is formed of 20 different species.

The garden is composed of aromatic species that are edible, robust, simple and require little care. A useful, aesthetic, and economical garden that demonstrates the richness and beauty of ordinary, non-decorative plants. An exhaustive list of the different species are present: parsley, chives, thyme, rosemary, sage, oregano, tarragon, verbena, chamomile, lemon balm, cabbage, artichoke, yarrow, calendula, savory, fennel, burnet, hyssop, dill, etc. This palette offers familiar colors and scents to visitors in a contemplative setting ready for foraging.

Studio ACTE : Estelle Barriol & Fanny Bordes / LMNL : Erica Chladová & Robert van der Pol

Founded in 2020 by architect Estelle Barriol in Rotterdam, and joined in 2023 by architect Fanny Bordes, Studio ACTE rethinks construction methods by placing the construction site and materials at the heart of the design process. Drawing inspiration from vernacular techniques, the studio focuses on a low-tech, geo- and bio-sourced approach, supported by applied research and 1:1 scale experimentation. Through a trans-disciplinary approach, the studio’s work includes small and large-scale architecture, material research, and self-building, aiming to find practical solutions to address resource depletion and ecosystem fragility. Using a Design and Build method, Studio ACTE reimagines the act of building by incorporating a hands-on approach while exploring reuse. LMNL office [for architecture and landscape] is a Dutch studio which specializes in the design of naturalistic landscapes and the architecture of natural materials. Founded in 2017 by Erica Chladová (Architect and Landscape Architect) and Robert van der Pol (Landscape Architect). In addition to bespoke architecture LMNL designs naturalistic landscapes, large and small, which take the changing climate into consideration and respond as needed. Landscape isn’t subordinate to the structure – the structure however, is secondary to its surroundings. Our goal is to design that interaction between architecture and its landscape to create more playful, powerful and livable places with a look to the future. Next to our design practice we are developing a garden, design and landscape laboratory named grondvorm, where we work to convert a two hectare disused mono-cultural agricultural field into a biodiverse culturally relevant landscape with wildflower meadows, native hedgerows, a small forest, perennial borders, beehives and a large potager.
