An artistic & landscaped trip in the heart of The Hortillonnages of Amiens > a beautiful aesthetic and poetic escape

Created in 2010 by Gilbert Fillinger, then director of the Maison de la Culture d’Amiens, the Festival aims to promote young landscape and artistic creation in an exceptional natural site of the Metropolis of Amiens formed by the Hortillonnages.

Arranged on islands, gardens and plastic installations of the International Garden Festival | Hortillonnages Amiens form a poetic journey which invites the public and the inhabitants to take an offbeat, funny or critical look, but always unique, on this complex environment, its history and its future; It is also a discovery in soft roaming which makes it possible to question the links between nature, culture, agriculture and heritage with regard to the many impacts caused by climate change.

Distributed between different plots located on the Clermont pond in Camon and Rivery, and on Île aux Fagots in Amiens, the fifty productions fully integrate into their thinking and design the contemporary issues of sustainable development and the evolving issues environmental: the preservation of the ecosystem, the weakening of the banks, the water resource, the nourishing activity, the quality of the food.

Since 2020, the Festival has opened to students of art, landscape and architecture schools. Three works are produced by groups of students from the UFR des Arts de l’Université Picardie Jules Verne around the theme of the shed, the traditional architecture of Hortillonnages.

The philosophy of the Festival, supported by proposals for mediation and workshops adapted to all audiences, aims to reclaim, enhance and perpetuate this green heritage. In addition, there is the desire to participate in the solidarity economy by distributing the food produced, and also a process of social integration with the agents of the integration work site for the maintenance of the gardens and the volunteers in civic service for the reception.

Over the 11 editions, nearly 170 gardens and installations have been produced by 260 landscapers, visual artists and architects; they were appreciated by over 400,000 visitors.

A beautiful aesthetic and poetic getaway, an artistic stroll that extends outside of Amiens on the banks of the river to Long and Abbeville or even becomes part of the urban landscape of Saint-Quentin: landscape creations to be discovered all year round in the Vallée de la Somme.

This project was co-financed by the European Social Fund within the framework of the National Operational Program “Emploi et Inclusion” 2014-2020.
