Out / Michel Eugène > Elsa Tomkowiak, 2019

Elsa Tomkowiak is a visual artist working on color; she deploys various mediums to decline the proposal of her works. The colors that make up light have been a source of reflection for many years in Elsa’s research. It is with these colors that she carries out a pictorial work anchored in her environment, in touch with reality. The light, the one so rightly filtered by our atmosphere and which allows us life on earth, which gives us to see, colors and nourishes plants ! Sunlight is closely studied in many scientific fields to understand its essential role in biology, chemistry, but also in ecology. To help in the fight against climate change, we use the reflection of light on terrestrial bodies in many way : painting a white old glacier, the roofs of Los Angeles buildings, creating false clouds…to return more light and thus fight against global warning.

The artist

Elsa Tomkowiak

"Elsa Tomkowiak maintains a passionate relationship with color which involves her own body - clothing, make-up - the practice of painting and, beyond that, a projection into environmental spaces, whether architectural or natural. She reinvents her chromatic arrangements, in defiance of all the dogmas and all the treaties that we have seen fit to establish over the ages. She recreates her own codes to achieve the specific harmonies and disharmonies. Elsa Tomkowiak's creative activity is strained by a vital impulse. […] In spring 2004, it was in the Alps, on the snow-covered slopes of the heights of Samoëns that she painted in the snow, for hundreds of meters. In Lyon, in 2006, she invested an industrial wasteland. By intervening on the walls and in the space with large sheets of polyethylene, she creates a penetrable pictorial environment of more than 1800 m2 in which visitors can circulate by bicycle. All of her workshop projects, drawings and works on autonomous supports, are the bearers of this desire of expansion and of the bestowal of color in the environment. " © Hubert Besacier
