Franco-German Garden of Peace – “Entre les lignes”, 2025

Franco-German Garden of Peace – “Entre les lignes”, 2025

Crest lines, front lines, French lines, German lines…
All are winding lines that have crossed territories, around which peoples have clashed. Offensive and defensive positions continuously shifted these lines.
The site of Hartmannswillerkopf is the very symbol of this shifting battle for territory, marked by the constant advances and retreats of both fronts.

The Entre les lignes project aims to establish a fixed, enduring line of unity and peace—one that may inspire and support future generations in building stable and lasting foundations for peace between nations.
This line takes the form of a long bench, allowing visitors to share the space, to reflect, or to meditate on the principles of peace.

Granite from the Vosges massif, visible throughout the paths that cut through the trenches, is used in three forms within the project:
first, as massive blocks forming the benches; second, as gravel surfacing for the pathways; and third, as smaller stones of varying sizes set among the planting beds.

Across a surface of 250 m², the planting scheme brings life and renewal to soil once marked by war, transforming the scars of history through the beauty of the living world.
The white colour of the flowers, a symbol of peace, will dominate the garden, interspersed with soft purples. Together with the greens of the foliage, these tones will bring a sense of gentleness, poetry, and light to the shadows and hollows of our shared past.

The artist

Cyril Servettaz, Jan Becker & Uwe Müller

Jan, Cyril and Uwe met in 2015 in Berlin while working on a project designed by the landscape architects of atelier le balto. A 25-year age gap, different languages and cultural backgrounds have never been an obstacle to the smooth running of their projects. On the contrary, these differences have greatly enriched their respective approaches and visions of landscape design. Their professional and personal rapport has led them to collaborate on numerous projects in Germany since 2015. All three are trained landscape architects, and their professional practices complement one another: Jan and Uwe work together primarily on the design and realisation of gardens in and around Berlin. Their work is characterised by an in-depth understanding of the terrain, plants, diverse uses of materials, and a refined approach to detail. Cyril lives and works in France, dividing his time between his design office and on-site garden projects. He seeks to offer responses that are simple and thoughtful—tailored uniquely to each place. Plants, as living matter rich in meaning—whether already present or newly introduced to the site—always take centre stage in his work. It is through the combination of their French and German nationalities, along with their complementary practices and approaches, that they created the Franco-German Garden of Peace at Hartmannswillerkopf.
