The carillon is defined as much as a musical instrument as a decorative element, which comes in different materials and sizes. Often placed above entrance doors, it is symbolic of welcome, inviting inspiration, meditation, calmness and serenity. At the Hortillonnages, the visitor is completely immersed in a magical environment in which most of their senses are awakened. When arriving on the island of the “Cabanon #WhiteCube,” the immersion will continue and they will face this open cabin invaded by wooden carillons that they can activate and walk among. The sound of water, trees, and birds will be mixed with the gentle clanging of the tubes that are set in motion by the wind. As the wind is always changing, each visitor will have a unique musical score for each encounter with the multisensory installation. By placing them on this island, we make it an entire space dedicated to sound immersion, as the Hortillophones of Raphaëlle Duquesnoy in collaboration with Olivier Chouteau are also located on the same site.
Our project is rooted in an ecological approach through the collection of local wood that we will gather together. It is important to us to only use materials that come from the surrounding area, are recyclable and recycled, to make our work an ethical production that does not impact the planet more than it already is.
