In this landscaped and wooded nature, here and there, trunks await and punctuate our gaze. Lying down or vertical, in more or less advanced decompositions, they form another landscape, a third territory which nests the often imperceptible and constantly renewed activities of insects, larvae, worms, beetles, of everything that perpetuates a nature lively and active. This nature opens the doors to a positive future as a world of preserved biodiversity. For the ELDORADO lille3000 edition, Yuhsin U Chang had spotted in the Parc des Buissonnets a dead tree, isolated, still vertical, without foliage, massive, with an imposing root system from which emerge its two barrels to create her sculpture Mémoire d’arbre. Disassembled and reinstalled on a plot of the Festival, the work retains all its plastic strength and emotional intensity. Here again, it is part of a landscape and a particular nature since, in the Hortillonnages area, the living is present in different forms, all linked to the intervention of man over time. A sculptural and metaphorical gesture, the work Mémoire d’arbre draws a cycle between past and present, redrawing the cycle of transformation of living things : a link, a place of transformation, a passage while inscribing it in the memory of trees.

The artist

Yuhsin U Chang

Yuhsin U Chang was born in 1980 in Taiwan; she lives and works in Paris. Graduated of the École Nationale Supérieure d'Art de Bourges and of the University of Paris I - Panthéon Sorbonne in a Master 2 Plastic Arts Research, she explores the border between the inert and the living : organic matter is her favorite means of expression. She uses raw materials (dust, sheep wool, flax fiber, leather, wood) assembled and organized in a sculptural language. These organic, residual materials are also used and worked for their capacity to produce a transient state, in suspense, in the making. The sculptures, often in situ and of large dimensions, are based on the history of the places, the typology and the topography of the spaces where they are displayed, while creating a direct "intimate" relationship with the context. Whether sculptures or photographs, her works explore the forms and poetics of life.
